Beschreibung
The Condensed Matter Division investigates the collective behavior of matter. The basic aim of this enterprise has two fundamental complementary components. Firstly, we aim to develop theoretical descriptions of interesting physical phenomena — such as superconductivity or the behavior of `relativistic' Fermions in graphene. Secondly, we aim to gain a systematic understanding of the wide variety of these phenomena by identifying so-called organising principles which provide a framework for a higher level classification. Intricately intertwined with these conceptual questions is the development of new methods — analytical or numerical for the study of these systems — to complement and extend the tools of many-body physics and statistical field theory.
