Expertise

Arbeitsgebiete

Eisenbahnanlagen - Gleisplangestaltung - Lichtraumuntersuchungen - Anlagen von Nahverkehrsbahnen und unkonventionellen Bahnen - Eisenbahnoberbau und Fahrwegtechnologie sonstiger Bahnen - Laboruntersuchungen an Oberbaukomponenten und –systemen - In-situ-Messungen im Gleis

Forschungsfelder

Working Fields

Railway facilities - Track layout - Clearance studies - Tram and unconventional railways facilities - Substructure and superstructure of railways and other guided transport systems - Laboratory investigations on permanent way components and systems - In-situ-measurements of tracks

Research Fields

  • (1.) Planning and Design
  • (2.) Superstructure and Railway Technology

1. Planning and Design

Field of Activity:

The initial point of designing railway facilities is their remit on traffic and operation that provides the basis for the functional model of a railway installation as well as of its particular components. The design task can either be the new construction of railway facilities or their rebuilding accompanied by the adaptation of operational changes and/or rationalisation works. In order to find sustainable solutions an integrated approach to traffic processes, railway facilities, signalling technologies and environmental aspects is needed in context with the surrounding railway network. Simulation processes and CAD are helpful instruments for an iterative planning process that provides feedback loops in order to gain a balanced solution and to cover the relevant aspects of all involved specialist areas.

Stresses in Subject Area:

  • Track layout of lines and stations in respect to necessities in traffic, operation and construction using up-to-date software tools (e.g. operational simulations, CAD)
  • Design of railway facilities regarding line layout and civil engineering
  • Examination and evaluation of elements and parameters concerning line layout and station design
  • Clearance tests on trams and all types of railways
  • Studies on railway infrastructure, line concepts and bi-mode operation concepts for tram and railway

Further Fields of Activity:

  • Definition and enhancement of evaluation standards for railway facilities
  • Integration of planning tools and data bases

2. Superstructure and Railway Technology

Scientific Placement:

Geometric and constructive design of track superstructure and calculation of its rigidity and stability regarding static and dynamic stresses,  maintenance of track and turnout constructions as well as interactions between rails and railcars.

Stresses in Subject Area:

  • Static and dynamic experiments on track and turnout constructions as well as on specific construction elements of tracks
  • Measurement, analysis and evaluation of the dynamic behaviour in the rail-wheel contact and recording of influencing variables
  • Diagnosis of tracks by recording all influencing variables as well as processing and evaluating information on the track and turnout geometry as precondition for the maintenance of superstructure
  • Research on the reliability of permanent way constructions, on deterioration processes and parameters as well as on abrasion and durability of construction materials (i.e. permanent way constructions with less maintenance demands)
