Forschungsprojekte am Institut für Internationale Forst- und Holzwirtschaft beziehen sich vor allem auf die Analyse und Entwicklung forstlicher Managementsysteme im Kontext eines komplexen und dynamischen Umfeldes. Dabei wird auf die Vernetzung verschiedener Skalenebenen fokussiert (Farm-Haushaltssysteme, Großunternehmen, regionale bis hin zu globaler Ebene).

Forschungsfelder

Insgesamt folgen Forschungsschwerpunkte des Instituts für Internationale Forst- und Holzwirtschaft den Millennium Goals und fokussieren auf sozialökonomische Aspekte von ländlicher Entwicklung mit besonderem Schwerpunkt im nachhaltigen Naturressourcenmanagement und der Armutsbekämpfung. Folgende Arbeitsfelder stehen im Mittelpunkt:

• Sozialökonomische Analysen/Diagnosen (Landnutzungsdynamik und Waldent-wicklung; Betriebsanalysen; Wertschöpfungsketten, Systeme der Waldbewirt-schaftung; Sektorentwicklung, Livelihood-Analysen, Klimaanpassung u. a.);
• Modellierung (Einflussfaktoren der Forstwirtschaft im dynamischen Umfeld; Stabilitätsmodelle der Waldbewirtschaftung; Farming Systems Research (FSR) und Livelihood Entwicklung mit dem Schwerpunkt der Bewirtschaftung von Wald und Agroforstwirtschaft) und Strategien zur Klimaanpassung, Energiewälder und CO2-Speicherung;
• Aktionsforschung (Innovationen durch geplanten sozialen und technologischen Wandel; Zertifizierung, Qualitätskontrolle und Monitoring als Lernprozess; Partizipative Planung und Entscheidungsprozesse; Strategische Planung, Monitoring und Impaktanalyse von Forstprojekten; Waldkultur und Forstberatung).

Research projects at the Institute of International Forestry and Forest Products primarily relate to the diagnosis, analysis and development of forest management systems in the context of a complex and dynamic environment, focusing on various scale levels (farm-household systems, big enterprises, regional up to global level).

Research fields

As a whole, the research fields of the Institute of Internal Forestry and Forest Products follow the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with a focus on socio-economic aspects of rural development and in particular on the management of forest resources and poverty alleviation. The following working areas are in the center of the activities:

• Socio-economic diagnoses/analyses (land use dynamics and forest development; enterprise analyses; systems of forest management including agroforestry and farm forestry, value chains, sector development and cluster analysis, livelihood analyses, climate adaptation and tree related mitigation, etc.);
• Modeling (influences from forestry in a dynamic environment; stability models of forest management; farming systems research and livelihood development mainly focusing on management of forests and agroforestry) , as well as strategies for climate adaptation, energy forests and CO2-storage;
• Action research (innovations owing to planned social and technological changes; certification, quality control and monitoring as a learning process; participative planning and decision-making processes; strategic planning, monitoring and impact analysis of forestry projects; forest culture and forestry extension).
