Unsere Arbeitsgebiete fokussieren auf die Themenfelder Biologie und Ökologie von Bäumen. Dabei konzentrieren wir uns auf die Reaktionen der Bäume auf Witterung und Klima und betrachten die individuenbezogenen, baumspezifischen sowie ökologischen Prozesse und Strukturen. Die daraus resultierende Konkurrenzdynamik und die molekulare Gehölzphysiologie tragen durch vertiefende Forschungstätigkeit zum Profil der Professur bei. Auf Ebene des Individuums spielt die Physiologie des Wasserhaushaltes und die funktionelle Anatomie des Holzes eine wesentliche Rolle. Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt liegt in der Erforschung der Kronenentwicklungen und -reaktionen.

Our main research areas concentrate on biology and ecology of trees and their reactions to weather and climatic conditions considering different processes and structures – from the individual, tree-specific and ecological level. Other points of this holistic research approach are competitive dynamics and molecular physiology of woody plants. For the individual tree we place emphasis on water balance and functional wood anatomy. On tree level we focus on crown development and adaptation and stress reaction.

In cooperation with Tharandt Botanical Garden and Dendro-Institut Tharandt, our chair deals with requests and submissions from practical forestry, from other institutions and from the general public.

We offer information and reports on the following topics:

• cultivation and utilisation of trees and shrubs
• identification of woody plants
• identification and causes of diseases and pests in woody plants, problems with city trees
• evaluation of the vigour of woody plants
• photosynthesis measurements and water status measurements in woody plants
• naming of the “Tree of the Year”.
