Expertise

Research at the Department of Pathology focuses on the cell biology and genetics of tumors. Evaluation of novel prognostic factors that influence treatment decisions in oncology as well as elucidating signaling pathways of therapy resistance in cancer like autophagy are a main research topic. A second line of research focuses on angiogenesis and inflammation in tumors, and the regulation of these processes by hypoxia and oxygen-sensitive signaling pathways.

Our studies have the potential to introduce new cancer markers that predict disease free and overall survival. The results of this research could also be used to make treatment decisions on the basis of molecular signatures of cancer. Altogether, our research has implications for the diagnosis and treatment of human cancer and the development of new cancer therapeutics.

Focus

  • Genotype/Phenotype Correlations of Cancer
  • Angiogenesis and its regulation by hypoxia
  • Regulation of Autophagy, Mechanisms of Tumor Initiation and Metastases
