Das Institut beschäftigt sich in der Forschung mit allen Aspekten des Entwurfs, der Gestaltung, Realisierung und Pflege komplexer, insbesondere multimedialer Software- und Anwendungssysteme.
Zu den Forschungsschwerpunkten des Instituts für Software- und Multimediatechnik zählen unter anderem Komponenten-basiertes Software-Engineering, User Interface Engineering, Adaptive, multimediale und mobile (Web-) Anwendungen, Entwicklung interaktiver 3D Anwendungen für PC und VR-Systeme, Visualisierung und Interaktion, uvm.
