Expertise
Through its research on pancreatic islets and diabetes, the Paul Langerhans Institute of Helmholtz Munich at the University Hospital and the Carl Gustav Carus Faculty of Medicine at TU Dresden (PLID) is making a decisive contribution to better understanding the mechanisms of the disease and exploring new treatment options. The PLID currently comprises 17 research groups working on various aspects of diabetes. Their collective aim is to decipher the mechanisms that cause the destruction and/or impairment of beta cells and to develop new approaches to restore their function or replace the destroyed beta cells. With an international team of scientists spanning a wide range of disciplines the PLID is one of the leading places for diabetes research in Germany. The close interdisciplinary cooperation among experts from various disciplines such as stem cells, genetics, physiology, immunology, cell and developmental biology with the clinical departments of internal medicine and VTG surgery guarantees the translational direction of the Institute.
